The Merit Story
Merit Insurance Company was originally licensed as a property & casualty insurance company owned by the Industrial Acceptance Corporation Limited (IAC). In 1974 Merit’s name was changed to the Sovereign General Insurance Company.
One of its largest branches was located in Toronto and it was there that the founding partners of what was to become Merit Insurance Brokers Inc. met and decided, in July 1981, to form a brokerage licensed under Sovereign General.
By June 1985 the new Merit brokerage realized it was necessary to form relationships with additional insurance companies to allow it to provide the best coverage possible for it’s clients. Merit Insurance Brokers Inc. elected to become a fully independent insurance brokerage and started to expand the number of companies it represented.
To strengthen its competitive position, the Merit organization began to pursue a program of integration and acquisition with other brokerages in the Toronto area. The first addition was Toronto Insurance Brokers in 1992. Over the next three years J.M. Dickson Insurance Brokers, Polsar Insurance Brokers and Lou Swimmer’s brokerage became part of Merit Insurance Brokers Inc.
A second new location, in Flamborough, was added when Glen Smith joined the Merit organization bringing with him an additional area of insurance expertise; the ability to fully service the farm sector.
Today Merit Insurance Brokers Inc. is proud to provide coverage for over 10,000 clients for their life, automobile, home, business and farm insurance needs through more than 40 different insurance markets.
