Marla Archer
Marla joined Merit in January 2000 after a banking career with the Toronto Dominion Bank and Canada Trust. She holds her RIBO license and provides customer support in the Waterdown office.

Doug Berry, B.A.
Doug joined Merit on a part-time basis while attending the University of Toronto, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in East Asian Studies (1997). After living and working in Taiwan, Doug returned to Canada and became a full-time broker in 2003. He is licensed for property and casualty insurance as well as life insurance and is currently working toward his CIP designation. Doug is fluent in Cantonese and Mandarin.

Ron Berry, FCIP
Ron has been the President of Merit since its inception in June 1981. He has enjoyed an extensive career, both on the “company side”, working with Commercial Life and Zurich Insurance, before taking the helm at Merit Insurance Brokers Inc. Ron is a Fellow of the Insurance Institute of Canada (FCIP) and has completed the two-year Life Underwriters course. He served on the Brokers Advisory Council of General Accident Insurance Company and is a past Chair of the Economical Mutual Insurance Company’s National Broker Advisory Council.

Maria Berry, CIP, CPIB
Maria joined Merit in 1981. She obtained her RIBO license in 1984, her unrestricted license in 1993 and earned her CIP in 1989 and CPIB in 2007. Maria is Vice President of Merit Insurance Brokers Inc. and is directly responsible for the operation of the Waterdown office, as well as handling her own book of business.

Paul Dahlin, B.A., FCIP
Paul graduated from the University of Guelph and held senior management positions with three major insurance carriers. He joined Merit in December 2001. Paul has both a Life Insurance license and an unrestricted RIBO license. He is a Fellow of the Insurance Institute of Canada.

Susan Doble, CIP
Susan acquired her RIBO license in 1989. She joined Merit in 1992 as part of the Toronto Insurance Brokers acquisition and obtained her CIP in 2006. Susan was promoted to Commercial Lines Manager in 2009. Along with Commercial Insurance, Susan handles Personal Lines Underwriting for Traders General and Pilot Insurance as well as her own book of business.

Julie Coakwell, B.Sc.
Julie graduated from the University of Toronto with an Honours Bachelor of Science. She joined Merit in 2006 after working in the banking industry and obtained her RIBO license in 2011. Julie provides friendly service as a receptionist, and is also responsible for data processing in the Waterdown office.

Roneth Gementiza
Roneth studied accounting at Centennial College and began her insurance career in 1996 with MultiLine Insurance Brokers as a customer service representative. She obtained her RIBO license in 1997. Roneth joined Merit in July 2005.

Shirlyn Rifol Javier, CIP
Shirlyn joined Merit in 2008 as a processing clerk. She attended Seneca College and obtained her RIBO licence in 2009 and her CIP designation in 2011. Shirlyn assists in servicing one of Merit’s portfolios along with her own book of business.

Conrad Kipping
Conrad began his career in the insurance industry as a life and general agent in 1979 with the Sovereign Group of Companies. He joined Merit at its inception in 1981. Conrad has an unrestricted RIBO license and a Life license.

Jillian Lipp
Jillian joined Merit in 2009 as a part-time filing clerk, and became a full-time administrative clerk in Septeber 2010. She graduated with honours from George Brown College in Business Administration and Human Resources and obtained her RIBO license in March 2011.

Kathleen Magisano
Kathleen gained bookkeeping experience in both a financial institution and a property management company. She became licensed in 1980 after joining the brokerage of Harrison & Chamak. She joined J.M. Dickson in 1990 and became their office manager. As part of the J.M. Dickson brokerage, Kathleen joined Merit in November 1994. She currently manages Merit’s largest commercial account.

Dean Morrissey, B.A., FCIP
Dean earned a degree in economics and business from Wilfrid Laurier University in 1985, and held senior executive positions with the largest commercial insurer in Canada. Dean joined Merit in 2010, bringing an extensive knowledge of both commercial and group insurance programs. Dean has an unrestricted technical licence and is Fellow of the Insurance Institute of Canada.

Priscilla L. Muere
Priscilla’s 30 years of experience in both general and life insurance earned the trust of her clients and friends. She started building her business portfolio with Multiline Insurance in 1986 and joined Merit in 2005 for a wide variety of markets and stable opportunities. Priscilla is a Business Administration graduate of Philippine Woman’s University.

Greg Parker
Greg was employed in the transportation industry as a regional manager for a major courier company before joining Merit in 2007. He obtained his RIBO license that same year.

Chris Piper
Chris worked with Guardian Insurance and The Hartford in an accounting function before joining Merit in 1987. Currently she works in the brokerage’s life department. Chris is also responsible for processing new business and endorsements.

Edward Rifol

Sally Shirley Rifol
Sally attended the University of Santo Thomas in Manila. She immigrated to Canada in 1982 and began her insurance career in the life department with Plan Estates Insurance Brokers. Sally became the Office Administrator at Multiline Insurance Brokers before joining Merit in 2005. Sally holds her RIBO license.

Mary Jane Rivera, CIP
Mary Jane joined Merit as a full-time employee in 1994 and acquired her RIBO license in 1996 and her CIP designation in 2006. Born in Manila, the Philippines, Mary Jane is fluent in Tagalog. Mary Jane provides support to the underwriting manager in processing new business and endorsement. She also handles her own book of business.

Suzanne Salloum, B.A., CIP
Initially Suzanne was a part-time employee at Merit while attending York University and joined the company on a full-time basis in 1989 after completing her Bachelor of Arts degree. She obtained her RIBO license that same year and her CIP designation in 2007. Suzanne is Executive Assistant to our president.

Glen Smith
Glen is a seasoned farm and livestock insurance specialist, with a broad agricultural background. He joined Merit in 1999, and was instrumental in the opening of a new branch office in Flamborough, which relocated to Waterdown in 2006. Glen is well known throughout North America for his champion “6 Horse Hitch” team of Clydesdales that have been shown competitively at prominent events such as the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto and many state fairs in the U.S. He is past president of the Canadian Fieldsman of the Canadian Angus Association and of The Rockton Agricultural Society. He is also past chairman of the 4H Queen’s Guineas.

Bob Snelson, B.A., CPCU
Bob earned a Bachelor's degree in business and economics from Marist College in New York. He worked for two major insurers in various management positions spanning over 36 years. Bob obtained his Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation in 2001. Bob joined Merit's Waterdown office in March 2011 and has an unrestricted technical RIBO license.

Barbara Swimmer, B.A.
Barb holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Toronto. She joined her father at the Lou Swimmer Insurance Agency in 1983 and obtained her RIBO and Life licenses that same year. Barb attained her unrestricted RIBO license in 1993 and became a full partner in Lou Swimmer Insurance in 1990. She joined Merit when she and Lou merged their brokerage with Merit’s in July 1995.

Lou Swimmer
Lou opened the Lou Swimmer Insurance Agency in 1952, successfully operating in both life and general insurance in the Bathurst and Glencairn area of Toronto. He merged his brokerage with Merit Insurance Brokers Inc. in 1995.

Barbrah Vickers
Barb graduated from Loyalist College in 2009 and joined Merit as a general office assistant. Barb obtained her RIBO license in 2010.

Carolyn Vickers, CIP, CPIB
Carolyn gained her experience as a personal lines underwriter at Wellington Insurance Company before joining Merit in 1989. She obtained her RIBO license in 1990 and became the brokerage’s first full time underwriter. Carolyn earned her CIP designation in 1995 and her CPIB in 2007. She was appointed underwriting manager in 1997 and Merit's Principal Broker with RIBO in 2003. Carolyn was appointed Secretary-Treasurer in 2005, and became Chief Operating Officer in 2010.

Roger Williams
Roger was employed in the computer systems industry and worked as a systems coordinator for Real Time Insurance Systems (C.G.I.) before joining Merit in 1990. Having obtained his RIBO and Life licenses, Roger has a special interest in motorcycles, boating and the hospitality industry.
